Nestle down in your very own Victorian country house. Close the gates, pull up the drawbridge, and hunker down in luxury and comfort.

Want a country house experience with top notch foodie destinations right on the doorstep? Here it is. Wood Haven is a handsome period house with airy high ceilings, rugs on wooden boards and feature fireplaces. There’s masses of charm and character combined with 21st century comforts and indulgences.

A Sherlock Holmesy library has deep sofas and a traditional desk topped by a workstation and two monitors – so you can work (if you really have to) and still be part of the get together. The family room has sink-into sofas, Sky TV, and log burner. There’s a swish kitchen/breakfast room with all mod cons which leads to a useful boot room (perfect for muddy adventurers) and utility. Meanwhile for proper pass-the-port dinners, there’s an elegant dining room with a table that comfortably seats eight.

You’re guaranteed a good night’s slumber. Upstairs off the galleried landing are four spacious bedrooms (two kings, one twin and a double) all beautifully styled in cosseting shades of cloudy greys, woodland teals and rich blues. There’s an indulgent family bathroom with a huge bath for long soaks, two high spec shower rooms and a dressing room for glamming up.

Open Forest and picture postcard villages are just around the corner while buzzy Lyndhurst is down the road. AKA the capital of the New Forest, Lyndhurst has so many excellent tea rooms, cafes, bars and restaurants you’re tripping over them. There are also very good local stores, including an artisan bakery and a family butcher, if you want to rustle up something tasty in that fab kitchen/breakfast room. However, a couple of really good country inns are only a short Foresty walk away.

Inside

Wood Haven is both grand and welcoming, stylish and cosy. Drive through the archway, park up, close the gates behind you, and hide away in this relaxing retreat. The splendour starts with an entrance door of stained-glass leaded lights opening onto a reception hall with rugs across wooden boards. This house is all high ceilings, big windows, picture rails, and feature fireplaces.

Interiors are decorated in cloudy greys, woodland greens and rich blues - reflecting the Forest landscape. There’s lots of eye-catching artwork. Period elegance is mixed with contemporary country style, and antiques with modern pieces. The impressive library has a Sherlock Holmes vibe. Curl up with a good book. There’s a workstation with two monitors on a traditional desk by the fireplace. It’s hard to imagine a more inviting space if you really need to catch up on work. This is a super space for settling down to a family board game or two (and there’s no TV to distract you). The big screen Sky TV is found in the luxe comfy family room with its sink-into sofas and cosy-up log burner.

There’s also a grown-up dining room - the table comfortably seats eight for gatherings of friends and family. You can order in or cook up a feast in the swish kitchen/ breakfast room with its flagstone floor, bespoke painted cabinetry, Belfast sinks, granite worktops and high spec appliances such as a range cooker and glossy American-style fridge freezer. There’s a kitchen table for breakfast and lunches, while French windows open onto a dining terrace. Off the kitchen is a utility and boot room with access to the garden – great for muddy adventurers back from Forest walks.

Upstairs is equally plush. Thickly and softly carpeted stairs lead to a generous galleried landing. Four big slumbersome stylish bedrooms include: one with a king size bed and TV; another with king size bed and luxe shower room; a third can be set up as a twin or very big double, and the fourth is a cosy double. They are all gorgeous with masses of storage and wardrobe space, decadent colour schemes and striking artwork.

The big family bathroom has a huge bath for a good soak. There’s also a girly dressing room with shower room that’s perfect for glamming up, however it could double up as a quiet baby’s room. There’s also the prettiest cloakroom with patterned tiled floor and painted panelling.

All in all, Wood Haven has masses of space for multi-generational or friendly get-togethers. Escape the everyday to spend quality time with your special ones.

Wood Haven is perfectly positioned. Open Forest and picture postcard villages are around the corner while lively Lyndhurst is down the road (there’s also a footpath across the fields). Known as the capital of the New Forest, Lyndhurst is home to the New Forest Heritage Centre, New Forest District Council, Forestry England’s regional office, and the Verderer’s Court. This ancient governing body is responsible for protecting the New Forest’s landscape, wildlife, character and cultural heritage.

Lyndhurst’s busy, buzzy high street runs the gamut from serious glam to trad tea rooms and cycle hire. Browse antiquey shops and lifestyle boutiques, buy the freshest artisan bread from Bakehouse 24 and delish local produce from New Forest Family Butcher’s. This is definitely a foodie destination. Try the excellent eateries, among them highly regarded Thai and Italian restaurants. The Stag is a favourite pubby hang out, The Vibrant Tap is the place to go for craft beers and street food, and Renoufs cheese and wine bar is very popular. Café culture includes the likes of Café Parisien, Peggy May’s and The Forage. You can also dip into Lime Wood the luxury country house hotel and spa (turn past Bolton’s Bench one of the Forest’s iconic spots), for Michelin recommended Hartnett Holder & Co.

Give in to wanderlust. Footpaths head off through woodland and heathland. Pull on your boots, hire a bike from Woods Cyclery and blow away the cobwebs. If you fancy a pint and proper pub grub, acclaimed country inns within a very easy foresty stroll include The New Forest Inn at Emery Down and The Oak at Bank.

5 stars! This was a next-level Airbnb experience! The communication beforehand was excellent and very helpful and there were no issues finding the house, which is walkable from Lyndhurst across the fields. Although the pictures do the house justice, it is hard to overstate just how luxurious and comfortable it is. Every conceivable amenity is provided and the facilities are all top-spec. Beds for example are ridiculously comfortable. We travelled as a party of 4 adults and 4 children, ranging from a toddler to a teenager. There was plenty for all of us to do and a highchair was kindly provided on request. All in all, I couldn’t recommend this place enough. It is absolutely stunning and very much at the luxury end of rental houses, despite not being overpriced.

5 stars. Woodhaven is a truly lovely place to stay. Everything felt very high quality from the gorgeous white sofas to the showers and glassware. Our host helped us with a couple of issues very quickly. Great location close to the forest but also not far from the coast.
